As many DC area residents have probably seen by now, this past week’s edition of the Washington CityPaper featured a great cover article by Angela Valdez, titled Members Only. The focus of the article was about Late Night Shots, an ultra-exclusive social messageboard for hard-partying, preppy scenesters in the Washington DC area. Ms. Valdez infiltrated the group, hung out with them, and then wrote an expose with actual commentary from board members revealing the arrogant, racist, sexist and insensitive attitudes prevalent among Late Night Shots posters. As expected, the young, so-called affluent members of this almost all-white messageboard have expressed outrage over the article, for showing the world how they are behind closed doors(or in this case, closed forums). I for one, commend her on writing such an entertaining article, while simultaneously pissing in the corn flakes of a group of elitist pricks with an overinflated sense of entitlement.
The reason this whole story is extra-amusing to me, is because I was once a part of a black messageboard like that. It was around the time that I first moved to DC full-time to start my career. As a result of this board(which shall go unnamed since the owner is still on good terms with me), I met some of the coolest people in my life. *Along the way, I also met some of the shadiest, back stabbingist, sh*t talkingist yet no pu**y gettingist, delusions of grandeur havingist, arrogant pricks walking God’s green Earth. I’m talking men that gossip more than women. Women who fight more than men. Adults who worried about their popularity as if they were still in high school. All kinds of backward Bizarro World behavior from grown men and women who were mostly college graduates and somewhat established professionals.
It was a lot like what I read about Late Night Shots, because it was great for networking purposes. Plus, you always knew where all of the parties would be in the city. What was also great about it(and bad at the same time) was that you ended up seeing all of the same people at the events, because most attended them weekly. I can’t lie, I was one of the Wednesday night happy hour regulars. Back then, I was at the spot faithfully on Wednesdays, the same way your pastor is at church on Sundays. The good thing about that is, if you had your eye on someone from the board, you knew where to find them and go make your move. The bad thing is, if you were to hook up with anybody, or even appear to, you would become the subject of gossip on the board the next day. Plus, some people enjoyed putting other people’s business out there for everybody to read, so as a result, I now know WAY too much information about certain people and their embarassing moments.
All of the core elements of both boards are the same. Off-color jokes; Claims of sexual encounters with board women(yet any chick who actually does have sex with a board member is automatically branded a slut); All kinds of personal drama being made public; The most physically flawed people holding the opposite sex to an unrealisitcally high standard, then getting mad when you call them out on it upon learing that these people are actually dating mud ducks; Funny nicknames for the less fortunate in life(such as calling fat women “Bears” and setting up a task force called the **B.E.A.R. committee); and last but not least, the outrageous events that become legendary stories that are still funny to this day.
The funny thing is, when I think about all the people in DC who hate my guts, the vast majority of them came from that board. A couple still hate me over a woman that they were both after who ended up choosing me. The worst part is, nobody ever said anything to my face. Both brought it up on the board, on some passive-agressive bullsh*t. As many women as there are in this city, it really amazed me to see that they would act this funny over one, when is was never even serious to begin with.
One of the women on there still takes issue with me because I was so drunk one time when we hooked up, that I passed out while she gave me head(which is more embarassing to me than her, but I digress). If anything, that’s a compliment! That means her head game is so mean, that she sucked the consciousness out of me! That’s that next level in relaxation. She can put that on her sexual resume. It woud read something like May 2001 – Sucked a motherf*cker to SLEEP.
Another one hates me, but his woman definitely likes me(as proven by the sh*t she tried to pull the last couple of times I saw her in the club). College Leon would have gone there, and done something extra nasty with her out of sheer spite. Grown-up, mature Leon with a consciense just left it alone, though. The fact that I knew I could theoretically have my way with her if I really wanted to was pretty much all the revenge I needed.
It’s plenty of other stories(and people from there who hate me), but I can’t put them all here, because I may need to save those stories so that I can make money off of them sometime in the near future. I just wanted to write a little something about it, since the article brought my attention to the fact that plenty of people have been affected by the Late Night Shots’ of the world. More people than even I would have realized.

People not on the inside of groups always take issue. It’s like getting a glimpse into a party you weren’t invited to. You get all pissed but had you (not YOU) been invited, you woulda been right in there making all sorts of racist, sexist jokes too…I have a group. It’s existed since the 90′s. None of us can ever have a political career.
@ Hostess, I understand what you’re saying. For instance, I was a member of the B.E.A.R. comittee when I was on that board, but that should be no suprise to anyone who reads this site. I’ve always been a shallow, sh*t-talking jackass, and I probably will be for life ;)
but my thing is, don’t say the something out loud(or worse, put it in print) if you don’t want the wrong people to see or hear it. It kills me when people act like they don’t give a f*ck, and get that keybord courage to say what’s REALLY on their mind, then get embarassed when and if their comments get out.
Oh yeah, I have decided that despite the crazy stuff I post here, I still might run for office one day, just because!

There are a few boards like that in other cities too. It amazes me that college educated adults can engage is such foolishness. The worst part is the men who hate on you because you get women they can’t. I don’t see how those dudes can look themselves in the mirror and think everything is all good. Good post.

Messageboards are one of the funniest things in creation. I used to like to go to video game ones and watch the kids who get beat up in school make other people feel like outcasts…the circle was complete. I got into beef on a D.C. based messageboard once…but it was carryover from real life in which I said things to dudes face.
