Last night, I had the pleasure of attending Julia Nixon’s concert at the Lincoln Theatre on U Street. Asian Mistress, the only person left on Earth other than myself who has not actually seen Dreamgirls, hooked it up, and I definitely have to thank her. When I arrived at the reception before the actual show, two words sent from the heavens above, let me know that I was going to enjoy myself:
OPEN BAR.
Yep. Free food and an open bar means that Leon is probably going to have a smile on his face. I was not greedy, but I managed to get a slight buzz going before I sat down for the show. It helped, because I was sitting in front of some ladies who were having one hell of a good time. They pretty much co-signed every song Ms. Nixon sang, with loud cheers of “THAT’S RIGHT!” “YEAH GIRL!” WHOOOOOO!!!” and “OOH..GET ‘EM GIRL!”
It was like having four Marla Gibbs clones sitting behind me, doing their best impression of Florence from The Jeffersons. My buzz made it quite amusing. Plus, if I paid for concert tickets, I’d want to have fun too. Nothing wrong with that.
Julia Nixon can sing. Actually, Julia Nixon can SANG! Proper grammar cannot truly describe how nice her voice is. Considering she replaced Jennifer Holiday in the Broadway version of Dreamgirls, her vocal talent is already established commodity. Still, hearing the woman live is definitely something else! I will, however, warn folks: her music is more along the lines of adult contemporary R&B. If you’re looking for beats by Timbaland, or songs you could imagine your favorite rapper making an appearance on…this is NOT your show.
I guess it’s time to break out my handy-dandy Swagger Scale and rate the Julia Nixon show:

There you go. Check out her album and if it’s your style, pick it up and lounge to it. Once again, thanks Asian Mistress, and I must also shout out I Now Pronounce You, Starting Today and my lovely arm-candy for the evening with her T.W.A.(Teenie Weenie Afro), Diva527! The night would not have been as fun without you all!
The lady that introduced Julia Nixon was this newscaster from Fox 5 DC morning news, named Allison Seymour. I bring this up because my Mom told me she’s related to my brother in-law, Brandon and spoke to her at the wedding. As soon as she said her name onstage, I said to Diva527 “That lady is family! Kind of…”
Oh yeah, Sunday’s Quote of the Week: “Karma’s a b*tch! Karma’s a horny b*tch with big teeth!” – Me joking a friend about getting forcefully kissed in the mouth by a drunk lady, hours after making a joke about my laptop computer.

Gandi Duke, truer words were never spoken
Asian Mistress, someone’s getting her CD as a Christmas gift. I know a few relatives who would enjoy it.
Hell of a show, really…and I didn’t even need to hit the open bar hard! Great seein’ you.
True. She did put on a great show. Open bar was just an added perk! Check your e-mail good sir! I sent you something…I hope it doesn’t interfere with the Movember event. If so, I’ll still show up to yours first.
