I Am Thankful For

It’s Thanksgiving day…I’m alive, I’m healthy, and I have people who love me. For that reason, I am going to be predictable today and list some things that I’m thankful for. Keep reading, because it’s going to be more interesting that last sentence sounds. I promise!

I AM THANKFUL FOR

- My immediate family. They love me, and they have shown an unbelievable amount of support for me and my writing/comedy career.

- Having a chance to reconnect with my father and half-sister. I had lost touch with both my father and my half-sister over the years, but I was blessed with the opportunity to re-establish connections with both. It’s funny, because Pops likes to have these long-ass heart-to-heart talks/motivational speeches on the phone. I think he’s trying to make up for lost time, which normally would be cool, but my T-mobile bill is a motherf*cker this month!

Plus, when he gives advice, sometimes he suggests stuff for me to write about that I know won’t work. I’ll hear anybody out that tries to help me, so I listen, but sometimes, I have to let him know. One time he said “I got a topic for you. You should write about this: Life is not funny. Life is rough.”

I respond by saying “Dad, you know  I write a HUMOR site, right? People come to my site to laugh…Not slit their wrists and wait for someone to find their lifeless bodies. I can’t be depressing people and sh*t…”

- Finding out EXACTLY what I want to do and planning accordingly. I finally dealt with some past issues, and realized that at this point, I have no point but to take this writing thing as far as I can. Making people laugh is the only thing that I truly love doing, so I’m just going to continue to make myself better at it.

- My friends and supporters. Basically, you all have been incredible. I have learned so much from so many people, that I feel blessed even though this was one of the most up-and-down years of my life as far as money issues are concerned. The wisdom, connections, support, love and comraderie that I gained this year is priceless, so the struggle has definitely been worth it.

- Being an unofficial black sex symbol. I know I’m on the downward slide as far as my pretty-boy status is concerned. There is nothing more pathetic than an aging pretty boy living in the glory days of his past. That is why I am proud to say that I am actually aging quite gracefully! I’ve grown to become an unofficial black sex symbol! I haven’t gotten my official certification in the mail, but it’s on the way. I have the FedEx tracking number. It should arrive sometime Tuesday morning.

- All the opportunities I have received this year. Thanks to all of the media outlets, PR companies, entrepreneurs, artists, musicians, writers and everyone else who presented with me opportunites to check out what they are working on. Especially those who gave me free stuff! Speaking of that, Honest Tomas I have not forgotten about you. I’m going to talk about those great shirts you gave me tomorrow morning, so hopefully your company will get some of this Black Friday money, my brother!

Happy Thanksgiving, and if you happen to have my phone number and feel like bringing over some leftover turkey sandwiches and sweet potato pie on Friday or Saturday once I’m back in DC, let me know. Gotta love a home-cooked meal, even if it is a day old!
