Prayers For My Kenyan Folks

Amid all the civil unrest going on in Kenya following the recent election, I just want to take the time to say that my thoughts and prayers are with the brothers and sisters over there. I realize that I do have readers in Kenya, and the country has long been on my list of places that I would love to visit someday. Plus, the fact that it has produced some of the most beautiful women in the world is highly slept on…which I guess is a good thing, since that means more fine women for me!

All jokes aside, I will be monitoring the situation over there, and I hope things can be settled somehow without much more bloodshed and unrest. I originally wrote this entry last night, but I watched CNN while on my lunch break a few minutes ago, and saw that the death toll over there now stands at 485. To my readers in Kenya, be safe. I’m praying for you.

there is just way too much craziness going on in the world today, especially over in africa. There is so much going on over there that we dont get to see or know about because the media seems to think that its not important enough. brittney spears shavin her head and not wearin any panties seems to be more interestin in the public eyes rather than young innocent civilians getting killed.

When I saw photos of the feet of children stacked in the morgue….man…it just brings tears to my eyes…there’s so much unrest in this world….instead of anti-violence and anti-war marches, there should be calls for global peace.

This is terrible. I had no idea this was going on. Thanks for mentioning this, Leon.

Is anyone aware of bloggers in Kenya? It would be interesting to hear a perspective outside of the media.

@ Leon, thanks for the shout out! :)

Man chalk it up as a another byproduct of colonialism.

When Europe decided to rape Africa they made sure to put smaller tribes in power over larger tribes and waring tribes in the same country as their rivals as a means of keeping the people focused on conflict instead of the vast wealth that the continent has. The legacy has lead to one bloody insurrection after another, all being financed by or orchestrated by outside influences.

Today Kenya, tomorrow Angola or Liberia or Sierra Leone or Nigeria. All while the profits of the continent are piped out to Europe. It’s sad and disgusting. I pray for Kenya though.

Bella is one of the bloggers out there who has been reading and commenting here for a long time. His blog is bella.kenyanblogger.com. I’m kind of concerned, because he hasn’t written since December 28th, right after the elections. I hope he’s alright.

Oh jeez… this does not ease my mind of the trillion worries I have about visiting Ghana in July…

Man, it’s horrible over there. As for the Kenyan women, I don’t know of any. Could you provide some pics?

thanks for the concern man…things got crazy for a hot minute and i could not get on the internets for a while….things are calming down for now though some parts of the country are now suffering food shortages.

the violence however is subsiding for now coz the “leaders” are agreeing to talk it out. we all pray for the best..

there is also, KenyaUnlimited, http://www.kenyaunlimited.com/, and their aggregator, as well, to get some more Kenyan voices.

I’m praying for all my family there; it’s a scary thing.

    Thanks for the concern Leon!

It’s a really sad state of affairs. That the selfishness and greed of a few politicians can cost so many lives is utterly depressing. I was in Mombasa (Kenya’s Coast) during the thick of things, so escaped most of the post-election craziness.

But I think it’s important to give people outside Kenya (including you and your readers) some perspective; the reality on the ground is quite different from what the international press would like you to believe. For one, the country isn’t going up in flames as much of the reporting seems to indicate. Much of the violence has quelled, and the country is returning to some semblance of normalcy. I’m actually quite peeved by the sensationalist reporting by ‘respected’ news channels like the BBC. It only propagates the view that Africa is the world’s troubled step-child in need of saving by the West.

Still your thoughts and prayers are much appreciated.

Thanks Leon! I echo Wambui’s sentiments and there is really nothing much left to say except I hope that the current peace holds. The aggregator that Chi referred to can be found here

Thanks to everyone from over there who responded. It’s great to hear accounts from folks who are over there living it firsthand, as opposed to the media’s take on things.

@ Wambui, How have you been? Are you back over there, or in the States again?

@ Leon, Wambui is one of the examples of pretty Kenyan women that I was talking about!

@ Bella, glad to see you’re alright, bro

I’m doing well Leon. I left the States last August, and have been working in Nairobi since. I miss DC a little, but for the most part I’m happy with the move…

If you want to do your bit for our politically troubled nation, I suggest you make a trip over here and help promote the tourism industry. I guarantee you that you will NOT be met by machete-wielding rioters! ;-)

Send me a facebook message filling me in on all your (mis)adventures!
