The De La Soul Concert Last Night

Last night, I had the pleasure of seeing De La Soul perform live at a club which I’m not a fan of(so I won’t mention their name). It was supposed to be free, but like I said, this club has never really been on my favorite places list so I expected the “free” part to be some bullsh*t.  Since they did not charge me an arm, leg, two testicles and a Baconator sandwich from Wendys to get in, I went ahead and paid to see the show. It was definitley worth it.

Before the performance, 9th Wonder was DJing for the crowd, playing all kinds of stuff that made people yell out ”That’s my song!” or “Aww sh*t!” depending on who you were standing near. During this time, my friend and I decided to position ourselves near the speaker so we could have a great view of the stage, and also be away from folks pushing and shoving to get around on the main dance floor. It paid off, because she got some great pictures of De La Soul, and I was pretty much close enough that I could have dapped those brothers up had I stretched out toward the stage.

De La put on a great show, but the best part of the evening in my opinion was when they brought out Dres from The Black Sheep. He performed Flavor of the Month, and then broke into “The Choice Is Yours.” It was at that point, I decided to use my camera and film what my slightly innebriated logic thought would be good cinema. I planned to record a clip of the performance while dancing along to “Engine, engine number 9, on the New York Transit line, if my train goes off the track, pick it up, PICK IT UP, PICK IT UP!” In theory, it could have been an interesting shot. Upon seeing the finished product, it looked more like what it actually is: someone jumping up and down with a video camera in a dark club!

After the show ended, 9th Wonder started spinning again. This is when the two ladies I knew at the show decided it would be a good idea to go behind the DJ booth and get his picture. The one that came with me is really cool, and I know she’s into taking photos whenever she goes out and has fun, so it wasn’t anything groupie-like. That said, going behind the DJ booth has somewhat of a negative connotation thanks to the scores of actual groupies there are int he world. So I had to laugh when 9th Wonder chose to play “Wouldn’t Get Far” when he saw them talking their way past security, into the booth. Like I said, no actual groupie stuff occurred, but it was still a little funny, nonetheless.

After an always tasty empanada from Julia’s right up the street, my concert experience ended. I’ll come back and edit this later with a Swagger Scale rating, but for right now, just be happy with the fact that I gave you original video. Also, Dres has started his own independent record label now, so if anyone can help me find info on that, please hit me up. I want to put the word out, since I’m using the footage I shot of him performing his biggest hit.

*Update* Dres actually got back to me the other day. He’s got a new album out now, called 8wm/novakane on his label, Bumrush Records. His Myspace page is  www.myspace.com/blacksheep so stop by and check out what he’s been up to.

I debated going up there to see De La Soul and 9th Wonder but my lazy side won over, and I ate my beef stew and brownies on the couch instead. Seeing your footage makes me jealous that I didn’t go. I really wanted to hear 9th Wonder spin.

Mmmm…. Julia’s Empanadas. I had one the other day. It was sooo good for me.

Damn. I wish I’d known about that show. I wonder if Nicole knew about it. We coulda all gone.

I wish I knew about the show, too! Maybe next time. Did you get low too?!

ha! I actually saw you at the concert last night and chuckled to myself. I was also posted up in the front and my pictures and videos look like midnight. I was a little wary of the “free” thing but luckily I had one of those flyers and was able to slide on thru. All in all, De La still got it!

Love De La Soul and Black Sheep!!! I saw De La at BB King’s in NYC a couple of years ago. When they did Me Myself and I, the audience (predictably) went wild and Pos kept mumbling, “I hate this song…” Priceless.

@ Zen, the crazy thing is, that’s my least-favorite song by them, too! LOL It’s funny how their most commerically successful song is the one he hates! @ Zen, you have just gained 25 cool points with that one comment ;)

@BigBrwnEyez, next time, make yourself known! I wasn’t on a date or anything, and even if I was, it still would have been cool for you to come over and say hi. Then again, it was really crowded, so I can understand if that’s why you didn’t make your way over.

@ Samantha, I did. That was the part of the tape where you could clearly hear my drunken-slurred voice talking about getting low and how funny this video would be. Unfortunately, all I did was give a bunch of readers motion-sickness!

@ Kayelle, I was going to let Nicole know, but I thought she was going to the Amel Larrieux show. That’s why I didn’t tell anyonne once I decided to go.

@ Sasha, he was good, but for real, there are DJs here in DC that can do what he did that night. Granted, 9th Wonder is one of the best producers in the game…but I can name at least 2 other DJs in the area you might want to check out since you missed his set.

@ The Jaded NYer, sorry for the motion sickness. De La has officially been holding it down for 20 years now.

@ Lala, the stage was actually a little bigger than it appears. I was right near it, which is why it looks so small on the video. Still, that place was too small to really hold a concert comfortably.

I didnt come up to you 1.cause it was crowded as hell and I was trapped in front row corner and 2. I figured it to be “groupie-ish”. Next time I catch you out in the streets (and I probably will), I’ll make myself known and gush about how much I love the blog.

Funny, me and Nya saw Pos at the airport on Friday. He was like one of the only black dudes there so of course he stood out…but of course only me, Nya and some other random black dude recognized him.

We wanted to talk to him but he’s good at putting on that “I know you know who I am but don’t talk to me” look. Plus, I’ve talked to him at Love before and he gave me that look as well as the short answers that matched it, lol. Apparently, no matter how short, cute and innocent one may look- EveRyOne is considered a groupie!!! Anyway, glad you had fun…lol.

9th Wonder is a machine on the boards and as a DJ. I wish I could have been there.
