Before you start singing “If It Isn’t Love” and all that stuff, I was not referring to THAT New Edition. Then again, since I did bring them up, I may as well throw on a little 80′s classic happy Springtime music to make you smile on this beautiful day.
The new addition to U Street that I am referring to is unique co-op showcasing fashion, art and music from artists and designers in the DC area. The name of the place is or DEKKA, and the site is www.DCAFAM.com, which stands for DC Area Fashion Art Music.
I found the place accidentally, on just their second day of business. I happened to be walking down U Street, angry because both of my favorite little coffee shop spots to blog from were both completely packed. I decided to walk to another place up the street, and I saw the sign for the store. Curiosity led me upstairs to check it out, and I must say, it’s very nice looking. Plus, the owners were there, and they seemed like very nice people. They answered all of my questions, and even spoke of a few plans they have to liven up their corner of U Street in the Spring and Summer months.
I can’t lie to you all…I have no idea how much anything costs in the store, so don’t get mad if you go in there and you can’t find anything at Wal-Mart or Marshalls prices. The clothes in DCAFAM look nice(although this applies more for women than for men), and you’re guaranteed to look like an original since they feature limited runs from local designers. If that’s not your cup of tea, take your cheap, generic ass to the clothing section of K-Mart or Wal-Mart and buy some run-of-the-mill apparel that a million other people already own! Just don’t stand too close to any open flames in that crappy rayon polo shirt you bought for $8…
Seriously though, the artwork alone is worth a visit. They have some really creative pieces in there. Between seeing the stuff there, and talking to acclaimed artist Johnnie P. Johnson of Fredericksburg this past weekend, I’m kind of inspired to start on some new artwork for the first time in years.
Not to stray too far from the original topic…Wait a minute. This it MY blog! I can stray as far as I damn well please! I’m about to get to straying, so pay attention people! I’m actually straying for a good cause.
A childhood friend of mine is involved with a non-profit by the name of Empowering The Poor, Inc. It’s goal is to empower impoverished and rural communities in Sub-Saharan Africa to self-reliance. They are having their 3rd annual Run/Walk Against Malaria this weekend in Fredericksburg, VA this Sunday. For more information, check out their site.

Wow, gotta make that little trek down to U Street from HU before I graduate and check this out! Cheap-ass or hella expensive, all I can do is window shop. Oh, that run sounds like a really good idea too. I’d love to do it…I think it’s too late for me to find a sponsor though. Plus I am broker than Tyrone, myself, no joke. Damn, where is all the free stuff to get into? :-( It’s about that time…full-time job and all that.
