Taking A Blogger Beating

Last year around this time, I wrote about playing in the annual basketball games that folks from the Russ Parr Message Board have every year. I also posted a link to the video, where I cracked jokes and watched from the sidelines, because my teams lost every game. This past Saturday, the games were held, only this time, payback was on the agenda!

I went from losing all three games that I played in, to winning every single one, and being on the court for somewhere in the neighborhood of 7 to 9 consecutive games(I lost count). It got to the point that I felt like I was on a real team, since we played together long enought to know where everybody was going to be on the court, and what they tended to do in certain situatiouns. All we needed was a coach, a playbook and some groupies.

Normally, winning all those games would be a good thing. When you’re out of shape, it’s a totally different story. Your pride won’t let you throw the game, but in the back of your mind, you’ll start to think ”I hope those other fools start making some baskets. I need to lay down somewhere!”

Running all of that time took everything out of me. By the time the full court games ended, I was slightly delirious and feeling it in places that i didn’t even know had muscles. My hair felt tired! It was serious business.

The funny thing is, the same competitive spirit that kept me in the games, was my downfall. It was recommended that I play a one-on-one game to five against fellow DC blogger G-Mo. I knew that I had no business going back on the court, but getting called out was enough to make me get up and give it one more go. The result: a 5-2 beating, accompanied by all sorts of elbows, shoulder-blocks and ass-bows.

Yeah, I said it! Ass-bows. The man literally knocked me to the floor with his hips. It’s on tape, so as long as brother G-Mo doesn’t do any “creative editing,” you’ll see what I’m talking about! It almost had me wondering if I had done anything to piss him off in the last month or so. I had to remind him that I’m his friend, because he went from laid-back friendly dude, to Clubber Lang from Rocky 3. I’m walking around feeling like a battered housewife right now. Covering up bruises and whatnot!

I’m talking a bunch of trash, but I don’t want to take anything away from G-Mo’s victory. He was tired too, but he dug deep enough to get the ugly win. I call it an ugly win, because it was the longest game to 5 in recorded history! Two 30 year olds gasping for air and missing open jump shots cannot be described any other way!

Still, congratulations G-Mo. You own basketball bragging rights until this time next year. If i had to lose to somebody, at least it was someone cool.

  6. Watching that game in person was classic, but hearing you tell the story makes actually seeing it even better. You put up a valliant effort though.

  7. Bruh… I dunno what’s more painful. The aches in my back, legs, neck, shoulders or having to watch this footage of us out there lookin’ like 2 drunk winos playin’ for a bottle of Wild Irish Rose.

I’m encoding it now and should have it uploaded sometime today, latest tomorrow.

I could add every creative video editing trick I can think of and it still wouldn’t help. It’s ugly maaaaaaan… it’s ug-o-leeeeee!!!!

  10. Where’s the video like you posted last year? I’ve been thinking about posting some sort of basketball video myself. I just have to make sure I record a “good” game. You know, the ones where you decimate your opponent and it makes you look like you’re Steve Nash, Chris Paul, Deron Williams, John Stockton, Kevin Johnson, and Magic Johnson all in one 5′11″ shell.

  11. When I attended Wes Unseld’s basketball camp back in the 19XXs, the fundamentals of ass checking was one of our first lessons on day one with the big fella.
