YMCA Prisoner Of War

I work out at The National Capital YMCA, which is closed for renovations and repairs this week. Apparently, they do this every year, and they tell members to visit other area YMCAs in the meantime. I decided to try the YMCA over near 14th Street since it’s the closest one to where I live. That was not a good idea.

Apparently, it’s more of a youth community center than a gym, because it clearly was not meant to serve as a gym. That tiny little sweatbox made my old high school weight room(which was outdated in the ’90′s) look like a state of the art facility. That place looked more like some kind of Vietnamese rape camp that just so happened to have a few free weights. Seriously, I kept looking around to make sure there weren’t guards with M-16s and AK-47s lurking in the shadows…

Even when you watch prison movies, they seem to have more excercise options than that place. Maybe I’m wrong for comparing a place called the Young Men’s Christian Association to the horrors of jungle warfare, but that’s how I felt yesterday. You can call me a gym snob if you want to, but when I pay for a membership somewhere, I expect certain things. Hopefully, the renovation will be worth all of the trauma I suffered yesterday. For the time being, I’m researching options of gyms to request free week passes from to get through this. I cannot go back to that 3 weight bench-having, two working shower-equipped, no towel-providing, tiny basketball court in the basement the size of a Subway resturant-assed Y near 14th Street.

No offense to anyone working there, because the folks at the gym were very friendly. This is just a rant on my discovery of the Guantanamo Bay-like conditions of the workout area.

leon, I feel your pain i belong to 24 hr fitness and i assumed while i was out of town visiting my family I could go my cousin 24 hr fitness…i quickly learned that all 24 hr fitness are not built the same….i thought i was at a middle school gymnasium it was horrible! worse thing was the ugly men who come to the gym trying to “assit” females and get some butt…i almost beat a fool with a dumb bell.. but most 24 hr fitness will give a free week if u “act” like u want to join their gym so good luck on your search. sidenote: u could always use your powerful swagger and flirt with a chic that works for a gym and u could use her pass and go for free!
