Usually, when I’m talking college basketball, I start and end the conversation with the team I grew up watching, the Georgetown University men. However, Georetown’s season was over before the conversation even began this year, so I’m going to just let John Thompson III take this time to regroup, and instead talk about the my favorite player on the one area team that is doing some damage right now: Marissa Coleman from the University of Maryland.
There is no doubt that folks recognize the fact that the Maryland women have been great for years now, but I still feel that the brilliance of Marissa Coleman and Kristi Tolliver gets taken for granted. I’m focusing more on Coleman today, because she’s the one that makes me say “Damn! That motherf*cker can PLAY!” pretty much every time I watch a Maryland game.
Plus, unlike Greivis Vasquez from the mens team(who is also talented), she doesn’t talk a bunch of sh*t that she can’t back up. Every time Vasquez opens his mouth, Maryland gets beaten like a red-headed stepchild on national television. Although the ladies’ squad can most likely back it up, it appears that Coleman has a better understanding of the impact of making ridiculous bulletin-board quotes about the best teams in the nation. I mean, I’m a funny dude, but that’s like me saying “I can out-joke Katt Williams, Jaime Foxx and Dave Chappelle, back-to-back, any day of the week.” I know it’s not a smart thing to say, and you know it’s not a smart thing to say…So why say it?
Back to Miss Coleman…Keep on annihilating the competition out there en route to another NCAA title. Here’s a highlight clip of Marissa in action, but I advise you to turn the volume down, because the song used in the video is HORRIBLE. You’ve been warned…

Great post, wonderful you to recognize such talent :)
im hurt my ut vols are out
LEON you are so onpoint with this post this woman has really skill and she plays smart. I love to see her play…
Its unfortunate that my alma mater U of M is well known for choking almost every year during March Madness. It’s really disapointing. So it was nice that they FINALLY highlighted the women’s team.
GO TERPS!
Man, I used to attend Montrose Christian games when Grevious played up there with Kevin Durant and his current UMD teammate Adrian Bowie. I was not all that impressed with him then, and once I heard he was gonna play for the Terps my first thought was, “Man, those quick ACC guards are gonna hand him his Venezuelan lunch!”
I’m teaching my 10-year-old son hoops now. He plays AAU and in other leagures. I’ve identified about five players for him to model his game after at the 1 or 2 spot: Chris Paul, Steph Curry, D. Wade, Tony Parker, and these two UMD women guards.
What the heck are “leagures”?!
