I got excited when I checked the mail on Friday and unexpectedly received a copy of Genius: The Ultimate Ray Charles Collection. Usually, I know when stuff is coming from PR people. This time, it was sent to me unexpectedly, and the discovery of this nice little collection of hits made me throw on some shades and a big-ass grin like Brother Ray used to when he was sitting behind his piano!
It also reinforced the fact that I’m turning into an old broken-down black man! I really spent my Friday night sitting at home listening to Ray Charles, watching basketball and writing. The funny thing is, the more I listened to the CD, the older I started to feel! At one point, I looked in the mirror and saw that my hair had magically formed an afro parted to the side like Frederick Douglass.
It was at that point, I decided to just embrace the fact that I’m an old soul. I was at happy, relaxed and at peace with the world…so who gives a damn if black people were calling themselves “negroes” back when the music I was listening to was first recorded? I have music from 2009 on my iPod as well, so I’m what you call “well rounded.”

Can’t knock good music, Leon. Did you pour a glass of…err…water to further relax? (ha!)
I say: No need to explain yourself. I’m an old soul too.
A lot of us dope (read: cool) folk are :)
@ Ms_Slim, I know what “dope” means! I’m not that old and broken-down! LOL
@ Wonderlove, I drank lemonade, woman!
Watch how you go throwing that word “old” around. Weren’t you at my 40th birthday party 2 years ago….lol!! You can tell that I have truly chilled off the bar scene and drink in general. A lady knows when to leave. Although, I do pop up from time to time.
