With the Cleveland Cavaliers out of the playoffs, what is Nike going to do with all those Kobe vs LeBron puppet cartoons? You’d think advertisers would try not to be so presumptuous about sports after Reebok tried to hype that “Dan vs Dave” showdown back in the 90′s. When Dan didn’t qualify for the Olympics, it sort of made the whole promotion look silly. The situation Nike currently faces isn’t nearly as bad, since LeBron is the reigning MVP of the league, but it does make me wonder about a few things…
- Question 1: Why the Hell are Kobe Bryant and LeBron James sharing an apartment, when Nike pays them close to $100 million each? They both have enough money to buy the building. Cheap bastards.
- Question 2: Are they going to stop showing the commercials now that LeBron is out? Nike should make one with the LeBron puppet sitting home watching TV, while Kobe taunts him at a post-game press conference. It would be fitting, after the way LeBron left the arena without talking to reporters or congratulating anyone last night following Cleveland’s defeat. Not that I blame him for being frustrated, but when you’re the poster child for the league you have to show some kind of sportsmanship.
- My Final Question: Wouldn’t it be cool if Lil Penny came out of retirement and beat the brakes off of both of those puppets? His commercials were more entertaining anyway.
I guess we’ll all have to wait until Game 1 of the NBA finals to see what Nike ends up doing. Until then, I guess we’ll all have to get ready to see Orlando and Los Angeles battle it out, instead of Cleveland and LA. To all future athletic shoe companies: Please avoid trying to predict the future outcome of sporting events from now on.
Yea I’m kind of blown about the fact they lost. But like u said I don’t blame Lebron 4 leavin the arena the way he did. I would be extremely hurt too if I put so much effort into a half-ass team and then lose.

I am sure the people at Nike are a little heated. They would have been cool if the Nuggets had won. They could have marketed Carmello vs. Lebron. Dwight Howard wears Adidas and none of the Magic’s players have Nike contracts. I guess they could resurrect Lil Penny. The people at Nike are pretty smart though. I am sure they have a contingency plan.

I think the commercials are alluding more to the ‘Great Kobe V Lebron Debate’ in basketball circles than the actual NBA playoffs. Consequently, The commercials still maintain a degree of relevance as that argument is certainly not settled. I like the idea of a new commercial with Lebron at home watchin the finals
Hopefully Bron’s people have some creative control and first refusal rights with regard to the commercial content, and they would NEVER approve one showing The puppet “King” (I hate that moniker) sulking at home while watching L.A. and Orlando go at it.
What they really need to to come up with is a Halle Berry puppet…
