Yes, I know the title of this entry is one of the oldest “yo’ momma” jokes of all time, but just bear with me for a second as I explain why I used it. For the past few days, I’ve been reading stories online about 19 year old Caster Semenya of South Africa, the women’s 800m gold medalist at last weekend’s track & field World Championships. The controversy stems from the fact that she’s been ordered to take a gender test because there are doubts as to whether or not she’s actually a woman.
I mean honestly, judging from her appearance I would have mistaken her for some random dude with a ghetto ass nickname like “Poot” or “Chop-Chop.” That said, if she really is a woman, I feel pretty bad for her. I’ve never been able to sympathize with the plight of the unattractive since, well…genetics were pretty good to me. I can’t imagine what it must feel like to be someone who looks unsettling. So if this poor girl just happens to be built like Darryl Strawberry with ruggedly manly facial features, that really sucks for her. I guess after track and field, she can go to Hollywood and take roles as a scary prison lesbian or something.
If these tests turn out the other way, then (s)he deserves everything that’s coming to (s)him! That’s just messed up all the way around.
I wonder why these gender tests take 3 weeks or so to determine. They must be checking for medical evidence of a sex change, because you’d think all they’d have to do is look and say “Ok, that’s a penis. DISQUALIFIED!”
Is it wrong that I’m kind of hoping that they do prove she’s a man? The reason why, is because it’s hard enough being a teenage girl without having the entire world telling you that you look like you were born with balls. If Caster Semenya turns out to be a dude, it’s easy to attach the villain label and not feel bad about anything. If it’s the other way around, I’m going to feel concerned for her. Sure she gets to keep her Gold, but that’s an unbelievable amount of embarrassment to go through along the way.
So yeah, here’s to the doctors finding remnants of her South African testes once the results come it. This is kind of like watching Maury Povitch and Sportscenter, all in one! What more could you ask for?

I hear you though, I HATE that they’re doing this, it’s embarassing and emotionally damaging, and she may actually never get over this. We can’t just celebrate that she’s an amazing teenager with a wonderful talent, now we have to talk about the fact that she’s not a supermodel. It’s so sad, I wish they would stop.

Leon, I’m with you 3 weeks to do a gender test? That’s crazy. If she does turn out to be a woman. That’s going going to be even more embarrassing as it is now. With accessories though Leon she could definitely have a more attractive look. Overall she is beautiful maybe not the prettiest of the bunch but she is a black woman blessed with a gift to run. Remember what the Temptations said “Beauty is only skin Deep..Yeah..yeah..Yeah…”
I think the worst part is that this won’t be her first “gender” test. The South African authorities had her do one too and it showed that she was a woman.

If she turns out to be a dude, then she was confessing it with her name the whole time! If not, then that’s just an unfortunate name considering the circumstances.

What the authorities haven’t said is what happens if she is “ambiguous”. She could have very well been born a hermaphrodite and was raised a female. Would that disqualify her since she is technically half woman?
What clinched it for me was old girl did not shave under her arms…As bad as she looks, hygiene shoulda been her FIRST plan of action.

The truth is that most of us were never taught that gender is more than a man and a woman. There is a continuum across the man/woman polarity. There is actually more than two sexes. There are people who have a XY chromosome but look totally like woman. Until people are taught about the variation in human gender possibilities then prejudice based on sexual profiles will exist. The problem is not whether Semenya is a man or woman the problem is our binary, black or white thinking.

she sounds like a man and has a moustache. i know it’s just a name, but semenya doesnt actually help her case… i hope they can work it out. but i’d be totally humiliated if something like dat happened to me. but on the other hand, if it happens to be true, she won’t be the first to compete as a person of the opposite sex (than the one they were born with)…
