On February 11, 1989, Nelson Mandela was freed from a South African prison. On the very same day, Mike Tyson got knocked the Hell out by Buster Douglas in Tokyo, Japan. 20 years ago. That’s pretty wild when you think about it. The same day a hero is set free, some random nobody beats the hell out of the “Baddest Man on the Planet” live on HBO.
This little piece of trivia knowledge is courtesy of my friend Saleem, a.k.a. Saleem The Dream Olajuwon. There are three lessons to be learned here:
- Everyone should strive to be as strong-willed and principled as Mandela. Not too many people are willing to go through what he did while standing up for their beliefs and convictions.
- Never just assume you’re going to whup someone’s ass. A fight is a fight. Mike Tyson took Buster Douglas lightly, and Douglas damn near knocked the half-moon part off Mike’s head.
- Buster Douglas kind of looks like Baby from Cash Money Records. Maybe it’s the scowl…

Something else important happened that day Leon, I turned 24. I remember being disappointed that day because I wanted Mike Tyson to knock the ugly off Buster Douglas….it’s still there.
