Yesterday, I got to attend a screening of She’s Out Of My League in Mazza Galerie after work. Admission was FREE nintey-nine, so I was already in a good mood before the film even started. Since it cost me absolutely nothing, the least I can do is write a review of the film for those who did not get to see it ahead of it’s official release. Here goes…
She’s Out Of My League is actually a pretty funny movie. I liked it, despite the fact that it follows the same formula as just about every romantic comedy ever made. You know the one:
Boy meets girl
They fall in love
There’s a setback
Then there’s an avoidable breakup/miscommunication
Next there’s the last ditch, all-out effort to make it work
Finally, happily ever after.
If my revealing that formula is considered a spoiler to you, then clearly you have not seen any romantic comedies in your lifetime. I don’t know whether to ask you what rock you’ve been hiding under, or congratulate you for that.
This movie is funny despite the cliches, so if you’re in the mood to laugh, check it out. Just know that you’ll have a few moments where you’ll have to suspend common sense or say to yourself “this really could have been written better.” Overall, the movie and it’s cast are likable enough to keep smiles on the audience’s faces throughout most of the film. If you were to ask me “Should I spend my money on this,” I’d say “yes, but it’s wouldn’t be my 1st choice of films to see.” Then again, up until yesterday I hadn’t been to the movies since January, so there are a LOT of films that I haven’t seen right now.
So yeah, it’s definitely funny, but not a “must-see” in my humble opinion.

I think I’ll make it part of my weekend movie bender!
