It’s settled. I am a jackass. Today at lunch, I decided to eat in the park because the weather was beautiful. Food, nice weather…I was officially in my happy place. While I sat on a bench just smiling and loving life, this young lady came and sat down on the bench right next to mine. She sat there silently for a moment, then proceeded to get on the phone and start crying, telling whomever was on the other end that she got laid off.
The first thought in my head was “Aww man. That really sucks.”
The second thought was “OK, she’s kinda ruining my happy place moment. I kinda want to ask her to keep it down, but I don’t want to get slapped. Let me move over to that other bench.”
At least my first thought was sympathetic! I’m not a total jerk. Just 51% of the time on average.
