Last weekend I ate Indian food from a truck, and lived to tell the tale. Not only am I alive and bubble-guts free; I am craving another opportunity to eat there. It was THAT GOOD! The truck that I ate from was called Sâuçá, and a good way to know it’s location is via their Twitter feed. I had the Mumbai Butter Chicken, by the way.
DC is notorious for it’s random-as-Hell food trends. One day, everyone is eating overpriced cupcakes. The next, white folks discover what black folks have known for decades, that Ben’s Chili Bowl is great post-night-out-drinking food. Now, it seems, lunch trucks are the latest big thing. No longer are these type of vehicles reserved for construction sites and Home Depot parking lots. The ones you see riding around downtown at lunchtime city are clean, and actually serve tasty meals!
When I first saw that there was a truck serving Indian food, I was understandibly hesitant to try it. I said to myself “Leon, do you really want to spend the rest of your afternoon on the toilet, blowing u someone else’s bathroom?” Luckily, I decided to live adventurously, and I was pleasantly surprised by the great taste along with the fact that I did not get the runs at any point in my day. So to the folks at Sâuçá, you all have earned some repeat business from me.
Actually, while I’m giving people free press, let me inform you of the two places to be if you’re a hip-hop music lover in DC. The more low-key, mellow option is Queen Makeda on 1917 9th Street NW. They have “American iPod” night on Tuesdays where you can sign up and play your own music while enjoying cheap drinks. The other spot is Recess Lounge at 727 15th Street NW. My friend DJ Jerome Baker of Rock Creek Social Club is hosting Good Life Tuesdays, which looks like a LOT of fun, and will definitely feature great music. You can check out more details about that on his blog, BetterThanYours.
There. I’ve just managed to drop more names than a verse by The Game, but everything I’ve mentioned is quality. Leon won’t ever steer you wrong!
