The other day, I got a copy of Donnell Rawlings a.k.a. Ashy Larry’s new comedy DVD, From Ashy to Classy. Once this carefree Saturday rolled around, I decided to watch it. I mean, why not laugh on a day without the stress of picking digital cotton in that great big plantation we call Corporate America? It turned out to be a great decision, because From Ashy To Classy is seriously funny!
Donnell Rawlings has one of the coolest voices of any comedian I’ve ever heard. He pretty much makes shouting an art form. If any of you DC folks see me in the street and I yell out “TAKE IT IN THE FACE!” then I want you to know that this DVD is to blame. Kick Donnell’s ass, not mine! From a comedic viewpoint, I love the way that he skillfully uses references to past jokes throughout the performance, or as us comedy geeks say, “call-backs.” I remember this dude from the days of Def Comedy Jam and Comic View, so it’s not surprising to see that his act is completely polished and moves gracefully from each particular topic to the next without missing a beat.
To be honest, the only thing I wasn’t too big on was the bonus clip, which was Rawlings’ parody of Erykah Badu’s Window Seat video. To me, it was funnier with the actual song behind it instead of the art-house style piano music of the DVD. I’m not sure if the record label said “Hell no bitch! You cant make fun of our song” or what, but it didn’t work as well without it. Still, that was just 4 minutes of bonus footage which almost do not count since the rest of the DVD was hilarious. I said all of this, but I have to admit, the lotion bottle at the end is still funny regardless of the music!
I definitely recommend adding this to your collection, or downloading Donnell Rawlings: From Ashy to Classy from iTunes. I’m probably going to watch it again tonight when I get home from this cookout I’m about to attend. I also need to pick up Kevin Hart’s latest DVD, because people keep telling me that special was great, too.
