Who in the Hell thought this was a good idea? Seriously? Imagine someone somewhere saying “You know what black people need? More self-hatred! Let’s have a light skin versus dark skin party!”
I know this type of foolishness has been done before, but I’m pretty disappointed at the sight of this flier. I wish that the ghosts of our enslaved ancestors would rise up and take turns slapping the shit out the promoters for this event.
Also, I find it funny that this party is literally taking place on Front Street. That says a lot about this event, and the people who would actually attend it!

While I’m surprised that people have actually gone so far as to openly market something like this, I’m not too surprised. We all know that black folks are still doing the brown paper bag test in their heads. i have a co-worker who has told me on numerous occasions how much easier I must have it because i look like the white folks in my office and can speak in complete sentences.
I’m albino and she’s only about 4 shades darker than I am, loud, and ghetto to boot. If they did like me better it’d have less to do with blonde hair and pale skin and more to do with her hoodbooger antics. But I get that “not black enough” crap all the time. Aside from the dumb shit people categorize as being suitably black, you can’t look at me and see a drug addicted dad, an abused mom, and all that goes with that but it’s not because I’m light skinned, it’s because I have a good ton of self respect.
Also being albino tends to go beyond light skinned versus dark skinned. It’s often considered outside of any conventional norm and thus weird. I can see though, how this can easily come from “us.” I had a biracial man trying to make fun of how light I am. I was like, dude, you’re mom is white and you have blue eyes, therefore, you have absolutely no room to talk about how black I’m not but he felt justified somehow. Dumbest ass thing I’ve ever seen. Sorry for the thesis :)
