Love Beat My Ass – A Valentine’s Mixtape

Love Beat My Ass Valentine's Day Mixtape

Once again, I have put together a Valentine’s Day Mixtape for your listening pleasure. This year, however, I decided to dial back the sex emphasis and paint an honest portrait of love from all angles, titled Love Beat My Ass. I did this mainly because I have been going through a little something lately in my personal life which has led me to think about these things a lot more. Don’t worry, this mixtape is not “808′s and Heartbreak for Non-Millionaires.” It’s real love, broken down in four chapters: The Newness, Application of Titles, Sh*t Done Got REAL, and Happily Ever After…?

Below is the song list, with explanations on why I chose each one:

Chapter 1: The Newness
The Fatback Band – I Found Lovin – Some happy ass “I just got the number!” music…
J Dilla feat. Common & D’Angelo – So Far To Go – Followed up with some happy ass “I want to sleep with her” music
Ludacris feat Ne-Yo – Tell Me A Secret – Then comes the happy-ass “WE ‘BOUT TO DO IT!” music
Jamiroquai – 7 Days In Sunny June – A little unrequited love for those who didn’t succeed in their pursuit
Jay-Z – Excuse Me Miss – You already know what it’s hittin’ for.
Little Brother – Whatever You Say (Pete Rock Remix) – I remember the first time I heard this, I had to listen again and said “I’ll be damned! His verse really didn’t rhyme!

Chapter 2: Application of Titles
Statik Selektah feat. Skyzoo, Joell Ortiz and Talib Kweli – Talkin’ Bout You (Ladies) – A hip-hop love song that won’t get you funny looks if you play it in the ride with your boys.
Stevie Wonder – Love Light In Flight – Stevie Wonder’s music is so awesome, I’d take hair advice from him
Surface – Happy – When things are going really well!
Usher – There Goes My Baby – I know the radio beat y’all half to death with this song just like my Rocky Balboa Cupid cover art, but I put it here anyway. Don’t fake like you don’t know the damned words!
The Ohio Players – Heaven Must Be Like This – I don’t even need to explain this one
Tyrese – Signs of Lovemaking – Because I’m sure someone, somewhere is going to want to get laid to this mixtape. You’re welcome.
112 feat Mr Cheeks – Come See Me – Here’s 4 more minutes of sex music, with a Slim “OOOH-HO!” ad-lib thrown in for good measure. You’re welcome again.

Chapter 3: Sh*t Done Got REAL
The Roots feat Jill Scott – Complexity – Relationships are never easy
Bilal – Sometimes – Once a lover discovers what little buttons get on your nerves, they will proceed to push the f*ck out of them. Repeatedly.
Bilal  – All For Love – Dealing with love and loss is rough, and Bilal captured it with lines like “When you stand in the sun too long, even the sun moves on.” Besides the awesome lyrics to this song, you’ll know why Bilal is featured twice a little later this week.
Kanye West feat John Legend and Chris Rock – The Blame Game – For those who are slightly across the “passionate/dysfunctional” line. Sorry it’s the edited version…
John Legend – Another Again – When you JUST CAN’T can’t stop f*cking with the wrong one
Outkast feat Rosario Dawson – She Lives In My Lap – Just to reinforce the theme of confusion and uncertainty that I’ve set with the previous songs

Chapter 4: Happily Ever After…?
Murs and 9th Wonder – Love and Appreciate – After making it through the tough times, this is where we all hope to end up
Eric Roberson – She - This is a beautiful song which shows how something as simple as waking up next to the person you love can feel like the greatest thing in the world. That’s what it’s all about.
The Isley Brothers – The Highways of My Life – Whether or not things work out, gotta keep moving forward

Although there is no possible way for me to top last year’s mixtape cover art, I think I was able to improve the content with Love Beat My Ass since it’s a little more grown-up than Get Some Stank On Your Hand was. Then again, I’ll let you all be the judge of that. The links to download both are below:

Thanks for introducing me to quite a few new songs. Maybe next year’s mixtape can take a hopeful slant and you can include Jah Cure’s “Unconditional Love.”
