I’m going to see Beats Rhymes and Life: The Travels of A Tribe Called Quest tonight since it’s opening in DC. I had a chance to see it last weekend in Los Angeles, but well, liquor happened, and I didn’t make it to the theater. This time, I bought my tickets in advance. I hate wasting money, so I will definitely be there come Hell or high water. Still, it’s a shame that I find myself feeling the need to trick myself in advance to keep from doing something impulsive the day of an event and ruining a good plan. I don’t know if I feel worse about having to resort to such tactics, or the fact that they actually work! I sit back sometimes and think to myself, “Wow, I’m actually somehow smarter than ME!”
Attention Deficit Disorder is something else, I tell ya…
Back to the movie, I am looking forward to seeing Beats Rhymes and Life, but I’m pretty sure that once I arrive, I’m going to know half of the people there. The “Real Hip-Hop” crowd in DC is pretty close-knit. Thanks to this, I already know that as soon as the first hint of Tribe music starts playing, a good percentage of the theater will be rhyming along. This could make it fun, but it could also make it annoying if I miss some important dialogue because someone sitting behind me is yelling “OHMYGOD YES! OHMYGOD!” at the top of their lungs.
Even if the crowd is raucous, I can understand why. I grew up on A Tribe Called Quest, to the point that I almost called my mom to brag when Q-Tip started following me on Twitter.
Yes, I was that pressed. I wisely held in the urge to be a name-dropping punk bish in front of the woman who brought me into this world, but I’m sharing it with you to give you an idea of my level of devotion. Since the Low End Theory was one of the first actual CDs I ever owned(stepping up from cassettes), let me end this the way that album started…

AWWWW!!!!
I need for you to get off of Q-Tip’s nuts…especially since I’m already there ;)
Let us know how you like the movie.
The movie was great despite what critics had to say. Understanding some of the dynamics of the group and reminiscing on the music was all I needed to be in a zone….not to mention the eye candy by the name of Ali! LOL
I really enjoyed it. I didn’t even leave the theater until the credits stopped rolling. Oh yeah, I’m happy for Ali since he got his teeth fixed. Every woman I know who saw it kept talking about him afterward.
Don’t worry I have found out I am smarter than myself on several occasions. lol
I’m in good company, I see!
