One More Reason To Respect Larry Merchant

Floyd Mayweather Jr insulting Larry Merchant

I love the "WTF" expression on Merchant's face.

Larry Merchant is a hater. Always has been, always will be. That said, it takes a real set of gonads to constantly antagonize men who are trained to beat people up for a living. We all witnessed that last night during the controversial Floyd Mayweather Jr. knockout of Victor Ortiz. When called out by Mayweather on live TV, Larry Merchant’s response was to look the man in the eye and say “I wish I was 50 years younger. I’d kick your ass.” It was easily the quote of the year. Larry Merchant became 2011′s Antoine Dodson and Best Cry Ever, all in one defiant stand. I have a new respect for the guy.

Side Note: I linked to the Bambi’s Mother Dies version of Best Cry Ever, because it was the one that amused me the most. Also, my thoughts on the fight are at the end of this entry.

Back to Larry Merchant; this was not his first tough guy moment. Years ago, some fan tried to interrupt one of his interviews, and Larry mushed the sh*t out of him right there in the middle of the ring.

See? That guy deserved it though. Anyone dumb enough to jump in the ring at a sports event, ESPECIALLY one involving fighters, is asking to be physically assaulted. My favorite video ever of this sort of thing was a clip from old school WCW wrestling where some fan jumped in the ring and got choked out by the referee. That’s right; The REFEREE! It was an embarrassing display of bitchassedness.

I love all the shit that Bobby Heenan was talking after the flying knee and takedown, like calling the fan “Tough Guy” and making a jail jokes like “Bon appetit on tin plates.” It was instant karma at it’s finest.

Once again, Larry Merchant is an old curmudgeon, but he’s a tough old curmudgeon. I will end this entry with my take on the Mayweather vs Ortiz fight last night:

When you try to head-butt someone like Bonk the Caveman, then kiss him, you deserve whatever happens to you – Ortiz should be ashamed of himself. Also, don’t act like I’m the only person who remember that old school Bonk’s Adventure video game.

Keep your guard up at all times. Literally! – You hear that saying all the time in boxing, but rarely do you see it play out in such over-the-top fashion. I hate that the fight ended on what was essentially a couple of sucker punches, but Floyd Mayweather was clearly winning and as I said before, Ortiz kissed the man. He deserved to get dropped for not paying attention and repeatedly apologizing for his unsportsmanlike conduct. It was a VERY cheap win for Floyd, but…whatever. I’m pretty indifferent at this point.

The whole thing happened so fast, the referee didn’t even know what to do. He was talking to the timekeeper, and looked up like “Oh sh*t! He’s on the canvas! I should probably  do something! Err, umm uhh…ONE! TWO! THREE! FOUR!…” It was a sloppy ending to the fight, but it was hilarious, so I’m completely satisfied with the result.

Floyd Mayweather Jr. needs to stop ducking Manny Pacquiao and just fight the man –  Enough with the side-stepping and bojangling; the world wants to see this fight happen. Floyd Mayweather Jr. claims steroid rumors as the reason the fight vs Pacquiao fell apart, but he went on and fought Shane Mosley, who actually has a history of steroid use. My whole thing is, be consistent with your bullsh*t! I honestly think Mayweather can beat Pacquiao, but we may never get a chance to find out.

Manny needs to just do the drug tests. Mayweather has more to lose andhasa righttobea bit more picky, so Manny needs to do the work to fight him if he really wants it.

I feel you. If they really wanted to, they’d find a way to make this fight happen and satisfy everyone involved.

Well, it’s not like Floyd had never kissed him before.

Larry Merchant is a dick and Bernard Hopkins carried his ass before too!
These “fights” are nothing but a payday this sport is boring now, nothing like it was when we were youngins. Although it has probably always been dirty at least it used to be more competitive and alot more exciting.
